Space 1999 – Hawk Mark IX

The model is quite new and very well done. The plastics are ok and the level of detail is very high. I had some concern about the very tiny parts because they look very delicate.

I started with the usual wash with soap to remove all the silicone oil of the molds and than I proceeded with a coat of white primer. I chose white because the model is basically white/orange (if you want to build the TV version) or completely white if you want to build the studio version.

Started with the tiny and big pieces. I sprayed with airbrush directly on the sprues and then I separated them. The assembly was really simple and all the holes and slids gave directions.

Basically there was a lot of masking to do (for the TV version) because of the orange parts but everything went quite OK. The missiles and the side propulsors were too much complicated for my taste but they were ok in the end.

A coat of gloss varnish was added before applying the decals; after that I added another coat of gloss for the weathering with oil paint and mineral oil (not so heavy) and finally a coat of matte transparent. You can see the result here:

Only one final problem. The stand is done with a wire but the base had a hole that was bigger than the steel wire, so I had to invent a solution with a wood cylinder taken from a longer model rod and place an hole in the middle. I will add some additional pictures of the Hawk on the stand when I will have the possibility to transfer it safe and sound to the final stand in my house (at the moment is heavily packed to avoid any damage).
